About 60 miles east of Reno, the City of Fallon is situated at the Nevada junction of U.S. Highway 50—the east-west traversing “Loneliest Road in America”—and north-south running U.S. Highway 95. Fallon may be called a "small town," but what it has to offer is anything but. The city and surrounding areas contain abundant places and opportunities for recreation, from picnicking in a beautiful park to gunning a dune buggy up Sand Mountain. Those with cultural appetites enjoy the local Oats Park Art Center, galleries, museum, historic attractions, performances, literary readings, visual arts exhibitions, and community and other events. Between the City's efforts to assist companies, such as its development of the New River Business Park, and Nevada's favorable tax structure, Fallon's economic climate is one in which new and existing firms can thrive.

Fallon is primarily an agricultural community. Although the area is arid, approximately 50,000 acres (200 km2) of farmland are irrigated with water supplied by the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District. The principal crop is alfalfa. Fallon Heart O' Gold cantaloupes were once distributed throughout the nation, but are now mostly grown for local consumption. Naval Air Station Fallon, home of the Navy's Top Gun training program since 1996, also provides a significant source of employment. Fallon is known as the "Oasis of Nevada."
